This proposal seeks funding for 5 undergraduate summer positions to perform research work in a laboratory within the Lillehei Heart Institute of the University of Minnesota. The Lillehei Heart Institute is the organizing body for cardiovascular research across the University of Minnesota, whose goal is to drive excellence in advancing the march towards cures, improved treatments and prevention for cardiovascular disease. Students will have the opportunity to perform laboratory research with five research sponsors, all of whom have extensive NIH-funded research programs, and a strong history of training and mentorship. These sponsors also have an excellent history of publishing papers in which undergraduates have provided data to earn authorships. The laboratory research will be enriched by educational activities. These include (1) a weekly lunch and learn meeting hosted by a different faculty member each week, and covering a variety of research, academic, and career-related topics (2) field trips to the Visible Heart Laboratory, the Experimental Services Services Laboratory, and the Advanced Preclinical Imaging Center (APIC) Laboratory, and (3) participation as a poster presenter at the annual Cardiopalooza, the University of Minnesota's annual summer cardiovascular retreat.
